Burn them all! Is Daenerys the Mad Queen?

This weeks episode of Game of Thrones gave fans what we have been waiting for since season 1, a mother f**king dragon absolutely laying waste to a Westerosi army. If you have not seen this weeks episode, “The Spoils of War”, then you are living your life wrong and I don’t think we should see each other any more, it’s not me it’s you. As great as this episode was, and my god it was excellent, it also really strengthens a long held theory by many fans of the fantasy show. Will Daenerys follow in her father’s footsteps and become the Mad Queen?

At this point in the show, everyone knows about the awful Aerys Targaryen, the Mad King, the father of Daenerys, the man who burned Ned Stark’s father and brother alive, the man who Robert Baratheon rebelled against, the man who Jaime Lannister King-slayed, and the man who famously said: “Burn them all”. For years there has been massive fan speculation that Daenerys may follow her father down the path of insanity and this weeks episode, as well as the trailer for next weeks episode, strongly hints at just that.

Starting with this week, we see Daenerys receive word that practically all of her Westerosi armies and allies have been defeated, captured, or killed. She immediately lashes out at Tyrion, questioning his loyalty to her cause due to his strategy’s failure, and then proclaims that she is going to ride the dragons out and burn Cersei to death in the Red Keep. Tyrion adamantly suggests against doing that, and instead bring the Dothraki to the mainland. She seemingly ignores Tyrion and marches to Jon Snow and demands he gives her his advice as well. Jon sides with Tyrion, stating that if she was to burn castles and cities with dragons, the people will fear her. In an apparent compromise, Daenerys leads the Dothraki on an attack against the Lannister loot train while riding Drogon into battle where she obliterates the Lannister army with dragon fire.

The trailer for the next episode shows Daenerys standing with Drogon above the defeated Lannister army saying “I am not here to murder. Bend the knee and join me, or refuse and die.” An extremely hypocritical statement, that Tyrion witnesses and looks troubled by. Then Varys tells Tyrion “You need to find a way to make her listen” over shots of Daenerys with Drogon looking mad and badass as hell.

In my mind, this foreshadows a strong possibility that Daenerys is going to become too full of herself and the power she wields with the dragons. Possibly to the point where she feels that she no longer should even consider listening to the “clever plans” of Tyrion or her council because she feels invincible with her dragons. Tyrion will have to try to reign in her growing arrogance, or she will become exactly like her father before her. Therefore, turning the people she hopes to rule and the people who have been by her side, against her. Which could also lead to her eventual failure, because, as we have seen this episode, the dragons are not even close to invincible. I’m calling it right now, I think we see a dragon or maybe even two die by the end of this season.

So for right now, it is unclear whether or not Daenerys will end up being as despicable as her father, but it is clearly something that the show likes to play around with so who knows what may happen in the future. Overall, this episode also had some other incredible stuff going on, particularly Bran and Arya were very interesting. This episode is a 9 out of 10 for me, I still can’t believe they ended 10 minutes early!
